not yet 9 a.m. but already every table in Domino Park is filled with Cuban men

DALLAS – I peer through the window of history and see a painful memory in the reflection.
Suddenly I’m staring back on November 22, 1963 – the day before my birthday. I’m sitting in our living room watching television when the words BULLETIN, BULLETIN flash on the screen.

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA – I arrive at what’s called “the loudest hole in golf” and I’m greeted by silence. The phone call from our friends and frequent travel companions Dave and
Mary Apps from B.C. held promise of a grand new adventure. “We've found a super deal,” they enthused. “Cruise for 10 days on the
Polar Star out of St John's to circumnavigate Newfoundland. Normal rate:
$5,000 per person. Special shoulder season September rate: $2,500 per
person - taxes in.”

SAN FRANCISCO - It's not that I forgot how hilly San Francisco is. But
I'm a sucker for walking so when I arrived in the city to learn that I
had only a .long walk from the BART train station to the Huntington
Hotel where I was staying, I thought no sweat. I'd been warned to take a
cab, but I'm a marathon girl.

MAUI, HAWAII – Oh baby! This travelling with toddlers isn’t child’s play, is it?
I mean, let’s not kid ourselves; packing up baby for long-distance travel is akin to preparing for a military campaign.
