Tokyo: A city on the move Bookmark and Share

Walking around Tokyo, visitors quickly discover that this is a city constantly in transit. Commuters fill sidewalks and rush from office, to subway, to other destinations at a virtual lightning pace. The excitement is infectious.

Although the Japanese capital could never be referred to as sedate, it is, without a doubt, one of the most fascinating cities in the world.

From the bustle around Shibuya Station where millions of locals pass on their way to and from work--almost always people-watching--to the grandeur of the imperial palace, Tokyo is a city of major contrasts.

Old and new coexist—at times seamlessly--in a country that has long attempted to master the blending of tradition and progress into its cultural framework.

10 First Time Experiences:

If you’re only on a short visit to Tokyo, The Concierge highly recommends visiting these exciting neighborhoods:

Shinjuku—Tokyo’s financial district also plays host to some of the city’s most exciting nightlife and dining opportunities. Shinjuku station, which accommodates between two and three million commuters per day, is a good starting point for your exploration of the area.

Akihabara—The electronics district is a veritable wonderland for tech nuts. If you can name the electronic toy—and even if you can’t—it’s probably here. Expect to find good deals on gadgets, but be sure to shop around and don’t forget to venture deep into the hundreds of multi-leveled stores selling everything from air conditioners to shavers. Even if you don’t find bargains, take an hour to explore the area and marvel at the toys that have yet to hit shelves in North America.

Harajuku—This is the area to find the hippest of the hip in Tokyo. Think that Japanese style is overly conservative? Visit Harajuku and your opinion is sure to change. The bridge next to Meji-dori Station is a fun place to visit on weekends when teenagers dress in their favourite goth apparel and pose for photographs. It may sound bizarre, but it’s definitely worth a look.

Shibuya—One of the top people-watching spots in the city, Shibuya is a hub for hip music, fashion and nightlife. Spend a few hours taking in the vibrant pace during the day and exciting vibe after sunset.

Ginza—With a name that means “silver place” for the silver mint that once stood in the area, it’s no surprise that Ginza is now a treasure-trove for shopping addicts. Be sure to investigate the Sony Showroom featuring the latest gadgets that the electronics giant has to offer, as well as the landmark Wako Department store.

Tsukiji Fish Market—The Concierge doesn’t enjoy getting up early for any reason, but Tsukiji Fish Market is well worth the early rise. Plan to be there by about 6 a.m. to see Tokyo’s restaurateurs in action as they buy the day’s freshest catch for their eateries—and be sure to bring your camera.

Meiji Shrine—One of the city’s most important Shinto shrines, Meiji offers a peaceful oasis amid Tokyo’s constant bustle

Imperial Palace—A great photo opportunity, the re-constructed palace (the first one was bombed during the Second World War) is still home to the imperial family.

Tokyo National Museum—Located in the northern corner of the city, the museum is a must-see for fans of history. Exploring the four main buildings will occupy the bulk of your day. Clear your schedule or target main points of interest to ensure you catch the highlights.

Yoyogi Park—The green space offers a relaxing break from the city’s hectic pace. It’s also home to two of the Olympic stadiums built for the 1964 Games.

Best Buys

There are numerous places in Tokyo to max-out your credit card. Ginza is a great district for designer fashion, but trend-seekers and avant-garde travelers might want to head to Harajuku and Takeshita Street for some of Tokyo’s wilder styles. If you want the latest in electronics and have the money to spend, Akihabara is the area to visit. For a taste of department store shopping, check out Takashimaya in Shinjuku and for younger looks, Shibuya has streets lined with the latest in new designer trends.
