Marc Atchison checks into London's famed Savoy Hotel and finds the Fairmont-managed property treats its guests royally - some of the posh rooms even come with butlers.

ST. MORITZ, SWITZERLAND - The driver with the heavy Italian accent who picks me up at the train station in The Carlton Hotel's shiny new Bentley, tells me he’s been working at the hotel just three months — “because we are only open three months of the year.”

ANDERMATT, SWITZERLAND - Anticipation builds as the scenic Glacier Express train I boarded earlier in the day in St. Moritz begins its long, slow decent from the stunning Oberalp Pass into the Urseren Valley where lovely Andermatt and my next Swiss Deluxe Hotel, The Chedi Andermatt, is located.

INTERLAKEN, SWITZERLAND - I’m told people come to this picturesque mountain community nestled in the bosom of an enchanting Alpine valley seeking solace on what’s known as “wellness weekends.”

ZURICH - I walk out of Zurich’s bustling main rail station and ask the police officer standing on the corner of the city’s busy shopping street, Bahnhofstrasse, for directions to the landmark Hotel Widder.

LUCERNE, SWITZERLAND - I hang over an enormous copper bowl cradled in a hammock like a tea bag waiting to be submerged. My spa therapist Julia encourages me to relax. So I close my eyes and take a deep, nervous breath in anticipation of what’s to come.

THE HAGUE - Walking along the beach in the playful Scheveningen section of this lovely Dutch capital, it’s not hard to spot the Grand Amrâth Kurhaus Hotel. It rises like a giant sandcastle along the shore where thunderous North Sea waves crash against the hard-packed sand.

DUBLIN - I step into the lobby of the posh Merrion Hotel and pause when I see people wearing audio devices and admiring priceless works of art. I’m left to wonder: Is this the best hotel in Dublin or the National Gallery?

CONG, IRELAND - When the car in which we are passengers reaches a point on the winding country road where fairytale Ashford Castle and its Lough Corrib backdrop come into view, the breathtaking panorama prompts us to simultaneously blurt out: “Oh my God!”

MARATEA, ITALY - As our waiter pours the last of the evening’s wine, we look out on the black Tyrrhenian Sea from our el fresco dining perch and wonder what the lights twinkling like diamonds on the water are.
