German war cemetery a sad place to visit

YSSELSTEYN, THE NETHERLANDS - This may be the saddest place I've ever visited. Ysselsteyn, a southern Dutch farming community that nudges up against the German border,  is the final resting place for over 35,000 Germans who were killed during World War II.  It's a somber place that few people come and visit. No community in Holland wanted Germany's war dead buried on their doorstep - Ysselsteyn was ordered to take them.

I visited the graveyard last week during my tour with Liberation Route Europe, a fascinating non-profit organization that retraces the route taken by the Allies from southern England, though France, Holland, Belgium and finally into Germany where they put an end to Hitler's reign of terror.

The crosses at Ysselsteyn stretch in every direction for as far as the eye can see. Unlike Allied grave sites, though, there's few flowers placed on the graves here - they are the losers, after all.

With Remembrance Day fast approaching, I'll have more on this and other stops on the Liberation Route Europe in upcoming issues of TraveLife magazine and on our website - http://www.travelife.ca so stay tuned.
