The Bahamas may be the hottest place on the planet these days for Canadians seeking some warm winter sun. At least that’s the message Dionisio D’Aguilar, The Bahamas Minister of Tourism, delivered today when he visited Toronto.
“We (the Bahamas) are hot,” D’Aguilar told a press gathering while referring to the dramatic increase in arrivals from Canada in the last few months.
“Our arrivals from Canada jumped by 24 per cent in December of 2017 and the we’ve seen similar increases in the first few months of 2018,” stated the minister with the snow white hair.
D’Aguilar, who is working in the public sector for the first time after a distinguished career in private business, told the crowd “I like numbers and the numbers from Canada are very impressive.”
Of course, the Bahamas has much to offer Canadians, not just sunshine and warm weather.
Two of the best resorts in the Caribbean are located in the Bahamas - Atlantis and the recently completed and much anticipated Baha Mar.
Bahamas tourism officials said Atlantis has recently undergone a total rebranding and now reflects Bahamian culture much better.
Baha Mar is a massive resort featuring high-end hotels (Grand Hyatt, Rosewood and SLS have all opened properties there), a Jack Nicklaus golf course and a world class spa to go along with the natural beauty surrounding the resort.
The Bahamas has become a favourite with Canadian sailors in recent years - the waters around Abaco are especially welcoming.
The Bahamas are a necklace of 700 islands and 3,000 cays that are in easy reach of most Canadian cities, especially Toronto and Montreal, and with extra air lift and new resorts, it’s the perfect place to get a tan this winter. After all, things are still better in the Bahamas.
