Mr. Greenjeans of Captain Kangaroo fame and my youth would be proud to know that Canadians are making eco-friendly travel a priority when planning their 2016 vacations. At least that’s according to a survey conducted by booking.com in which a majority of those surveyed, 62 per cent, said they plan booking an eco-friendly accommodation this year and over a third (39 per cent) already consider themselves to be sustainable travellers.
The survey also showed that 66 per cent of Canadians would be more likely to choose accommodation if they knew it was sustainable.
And according to booking.com, many Canadian hotels, motels and resorts are responding to the growing demand from travellers for eco-friendly accommodation. 
According to booking.com, 26 per cent of properties have initiatives in place to protect the environment while almost a fifth (19 per cent) support their local community. Over half (51 per cent) of properties are currently credited as following official sustainability criteria from a recognized organization in sustainability, such as the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.
“Sustainable accommodation is a world away from dim lighting, low water pressure and no air-con. Guests may not realize that as they sleep on organic cotton sheets, washed with water heated by energy generated from the hotel itself, they are staying sustainably. Or that when eating a meal made from ingredients sourced within 30 kilometres of their accommodation, they are a sustainable traveller supporting local business,” said Gillian Tans, CEO, Booking.com.
