10 Things to do in Windsor at Harry's wedding

10 Things to do in Windsor at Harry's wedding

If, unlike me, you’ve got an invitation to the big event on this year’s British social calendar - the marriage of Prince Harry and American Meghan Markle on May 19 in Windsor - and aren’t sure what to do between cocktail parties in the historic city, well, here’s a few suggestions:

1- Tour Windsor Castle. The wedding will take place in a chapel on the castle grounds and being the oldest (11th century) and largest occupied castle in the world, where 39 monarchs have lived, you know there’s plenty of royal treasures to be seen here.

2- Visit Eton College. It’s just across the Thames River from neighbouring Windsor and it’s where both Harry and his brother Prince William attended classes. It dates back to 1440 and features some imposing architecture.

3- Buy a Teddy Bear: Eton has a great collection of Teddy Bear shops and even I was lured into buying one of the cute stuffed toys when I visited the town 20 years ago. Sadly, Geordie, my Westie, tore the stuffing out of Paddington and he’s no more.

4- Stroll through Windsor Great Park. This 5,000 acre green space is over 1,000 years old and there’s lots of monuments and ancient trees to see.

5- Visit Cliveden House. This historic 5-star hotel has a rich 350 year history and lots of royal secrets that actually brought down governments. Oh, if only these walls could talk.

6- Walk along the River Thames. The legendary waterway narrows at Windsor and some of England’s loveliest countryside borders its banks. Bray, Eton and Maidenhead are some of the historic towns that stand beside the river near Windsor.

7- Stop by Frogmore House. Just a kilometre from Windsor Castle, Frogmore House features some of the loveliest gardens in England and was once owned by Queen Charlotte.

8- Wine and dine. You won’t go hungry in Windsor and you’ll dine like a royal if you make a reservation at the city’s famous Michelin 3-star restaurants, Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck or his other haute cuisine pub, The Hinds Head.

9- Attend a royal race. Ascot, the most famous racetrack in Europe, is just a few kilometres outside Windsor and it’s a place where The Queen is often seen - her stables breed some of the best race horses in the world.

10- Golf anyone? Yes, Windsor has a golf course at nearby Stoke Park Club, which also features a 5-star hotel. But it’s pretty pricy, so you might need a king’s ransom to secure a tee time.
