Airfares triple in Hong Kong

Airfares triple in Hong Kong

Friends of mine in Hong Kong were so excited last week when the former British colony and Singapore created a travel bubble between the two cities, both of whom have managed to contain COVID-19 quite nicely.
That was, however, until they discovered that the cost of a Cathy Pacific Airways ticket between the two cities has gone from $3,000HK (about $500 Cdn) before the pandemic to $9,000HK ($1,400 Cdn) now.
Yikes!
So, I wondered, can Canadians expect the same increases when Air Canada resumes normal service?
“Absolutely!” is what several industry insiders told me today.
One went as far as to say Canadians can expect a minimum increase of 20 per cent on domestic airfares and as much as 50 per cent on international routes, especially favoured destinations like Paris, London and Hong Kong.
Airlines will be in a rush to recoup the billions lost during the pandemic, so air passengers better be prepared to pay much more to go anywhere.
