Amy Laughinghouse boards a cruise ship and heads off to discover the backwaters of Norway, where fjords dominate the landscape and small villages and their inhabitants open their arms to visitors.

ABOARD THE M/V VIKING SEA — We cross 66-degrees, 33.8 minutes north latitude, better known as the Arctic Circle, just after midnight; hot golden sunshine is everywhere, as though someone had spilled it.

It was a lesson I learned long ago, that the best place to taste a wine is in the cave of its birth. There is a magic that makes the experience much more memorable than the same bottle sampled on a Friday night, say, at a neighbourhood eatery far from its roots.
